Construction of the legs.
|
Pin placement through the legs, just below the thigh swivel. Two pins to support the twisting tension.
Again the pins are packed with Milliput to secure and reinforce the pins and legs.
Cut off the excess rod (coat hanger steel), and carefully grind down. I cut a little into the leg because I wanted to dalup some epoxy to bind the rod and plastic together. I chose to cut and grind with a high speed Dremmel cutting wheel. A grinding drum vibrates too much on the steel rod and risks shaking the bond loose inside.
Here I marked the spot where I would attach the legs. This is forward of center, and provides a better center of balance. The figure naturally has forward lean, and this puts the legs directly under this center. Due to the size of this piece, and the rigors I plan to put it through, I knew a chemical bond would not be enough. The 2-part epoxy would bond the plastics together I was sure. But to risk the simple shock of it tipping over on it's face during construction... I could not risk the legs popping of at a critical moment. I decided to use a physical bond as well. Small holes (6) were drilled, and two strands of floral wire were passed up and down through each set. Again, two pieces would reduce the chance of failure should one crack.
I enlisted the second set of hands of my wife, to hold the legs in place as I mixed the epoxy. A little dab here, a little gloop there and the wired were pulled tight and twisted in place. The extra epoxy was laid down as a precaution to tighten up the bottom.
